Start over

By 2016, I sought solace and renewal in the tranquil beauty of Greece. After the emotional turmoil of the previous year, I needed a place that would offer peace and a fresh start. Greece, with its idyllic islands, ancient ruins, and warm hospitality, was the perfect destination. The country’s rich history and natural beauty provided a sanctuary where I could heal and rediscover joy.

My journey in Greece began on the island of Santorini, known for its stunning sunsets and whitewashed buildings perched on cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea. The serene beauty of Santorini was a balm for my weary soul. I spent my days exploring the island's charming villages, such as Oia and Fira, and my evenings watching the sun set over the caldera, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The simplicity and tranquility of life on the island helped me to slow down and appreciate the present moment.

One of the most memorable experiences in Santorini was visiting the ancient site of Akrotiri, a Minoan Bronze Age settlement preserved in volcanic ash. Walking through the ruins, I was transported back in time, imagining the lives of the people who had once inhabited this place. The sense of history and continuity was profound, reminding me of the resilience and enduring nature of human civilization.

From Santorini, I traveled to Crete, the largest of the Greek islands. Crete's diverse landscapes, from its rugged mountains to its pristine beaches, offered endless opportunities for exploration. I hiked through the Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe, marveling at the dramatic scenery and the wild beauty of the natural world. The physical challenge of the hike was invigorating, and it helped me to reconnect with my body and regain a sense of strength and vitality.

In Crete, I also immersed myself in the local culture. The Cretan people, known for their hospitality and zest for life, welcomed me with open arms. I participated in traditional festivals, where music, dance, and food were celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. The sense of community and the importance of family were evident in every aspect of Cretan life. These experiences taught me the value of connection and the importance of celebrating life’s moments, big and small.

The cuisine of Greece was another highlight of my journey. I savored dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood, all prepared with simple, fresh ingredients. The Mediterranean diet, with its emphasis on olive oil, vegetables, and lean proteins, was both delicious and nourishing. Meals were often accompanied by ouzo or raki, local spirits that were shared with friends and strangers alike. The act of sharing food and drink became a symbol of the warmth and generosity of the Greek people.

Athens, the capital of Greece, was the final stop on my journey. The city, with its blend of ancient history and modern vibrancy, was a place of inspiration. The Acropolis, with its iconic Parthenon, stood as a testament to the achievements of ancient Greece. Visiting the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum, I gained a deeper appreciation for Greece's contributions to art, philosophy, and science. The city's lively neighborhoods, such as Plaka and Monastiraki, offered a mix of traditional charm and contemporary culture.

Throughout my time in Greece, I found peace in the simplicity and beauty of the natural world. Whether it was swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea, hiking through ancient olive groves, or simply sitting on a terrace watching the world go by, I felt a deep sense of connection to nature. This connection was healing, helping me to recover from my grief and to rediscover joy in the present moment.

Greece was a new beginning, a place where I could heal and find strength. The country's rich history, natural beauty, and warm hospitality provided a sanctuary where I could reflect, grow, and embrace life with renewed hope and optimism. My time in Greece was a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of beauty and connection to heal and inspire.
