Off we go...
In 2012, at the age of 24, I made the momentous decision to embark on a journey through Europe. Fresh out of university and yearning for adventure and self-discovery, I felt a powerful urge to explore the world beyond the confines of my familiar environment. The idea of traveling across Europe was both exhilarating and daunting. I chose Spain as the starting point of my journey, drawn by its vibrant culture, rich history, and the warmth of its people.
My adventure began in Madrid, the heart of Spain. As I stepped off the plane, I was immediately struck by the city's energy. The bustling streets, filled with a mix of modernity and tradition, offered a sensory overload. The Plaza Mayor, with its grand architecture and lively atmosphere, was my first stop. Sitting at a café, sipping on a café con leche, I felt a sense of freedom and excitement. The initial days were filled with exploration – from the majestic Royal Palace to the renowned Prado Museum, where I marveled at masterpieces by Goya and Velázquez.
One of the highlights of my time in Madrid was experiencing the local food. Tapas became a staple of my diet, and I quickly developed a fondness for dishes like patatas bravas, jamón ibérico, and pulpo a la gallega. Each meal was a culinary adventure, offering new flavors and textures. I also indulged in the Spanish tradition of siesta, finding it a delightful way to recharge for the evening's activities.
After Madrid, I traveled to Barcelona, a city that enchanted me with its unique blend of Catalan culture and modernist architecture. Gaudí's masterpieces, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell, left me in awe. The vibrant atmosphere of La Rambla, with its street performers and bustling markets, was a stark contrast to the tranquil beauty of the city's beaches. In Barcelona, I felt a deep connection to the creative spirit that permeated the city.
As I continued my journey through Spain, I ventured to smaller towns and cities, each offering its own charm. In Seville, I was captivated by the grandeur of the Alcázar and the passion of flamenco dancing. In Granada, the Alhambra's intricate Moorish architecture transported me to another time. The warmth and hospitality of the Spanish people made each experience memorable. Conversations with locals, whether in a bustling market or a quiet café, provided insights into the country's rich history and traditions.
Traveling through Spain was more than just a physical journey; it was a journey of self-discovery. I learned to navigate unfamiliar environments, adapt to different customs, and embrace the unknown. The sense of freedom I felt was liberating. I was living in the moment, open to whatever experiences came my way. This period of my life marked the beginning of an odyssey that would define the next 15 years, shaping me into the person I am today.
